eCommerce Modernization Project

This eMod IdeaScale is designed to be a forum for public suggestions and discussions to drive the improvements to the electronic patent application process. The eCommerce Modernization (eMod) Project will modernize USPTO’s application filing and viewing systems to better fit your needs.

You can contribute by sharing ideas, discussing through the comments sections, or voting on ideas. We regularly check through the ideas and comments, share them with the team, and will even post a few ideas of our own! Although we will not respond to every idea, all ideas will be reviewed and considered. eMod IdeaScale FAQs

More information about the project can be found at http://www.uspto.gov/patent/emod. If you have any questions for the eMod Team, please contact us at emod@uspto.gov.

We look forward to hearing your feedback!

"Bulk" patent application bibliographical XML download

Currently, in private PAIR, there are, more or less, two options to download XML-related data for a patent application. One option is the ability to download a list of applications associated with a customer number and includes general status information. Another option is to XML download a more detailed set of information pertaining to a specific patent application - this can be done one application at a time. For ...more »

Access Financial Manager via EFS login

After logging in to EFS using your PKI certificate, if you need to pay for something, you need to log in again to Financial Manager. This wastes time and often (for me at least) the link forwarding you to the financial manager page is broken, which means you cannot pay in the same session and causes a whole different set of problems. I suggest somehow linking access to financial manager to a given PKI certificate so ...more »

Submission and Payment Receipts

In the new Patent Center tool, we are going to start providing two receipts when filing patent applications. The Submission Receipt will inform users that the filing has been successfully received by the office, followed by a Payment Receipt to inform users that the payment has been successfully submitted. Vote “up” if you prefer to have both submission and payment information on the final Payment Receipt; and vote “down” ...more »

Collapse Financial Manager Notices

Users must access Financial Manager to add new personnel to their stored payment methods. When a user first logs into Financial Manager, they should have an opportunity to collapse various notifications so that toggling between payment methods eliminates the substantial space taken up by the notifications. To better confirm users have reviewed the data, the option to collapse could appear after initial login. For example, ...more »

Enable Request to Delete Attorney Data After Issuance

Because Power of Attorney effectively ends at issuance, practitioners are prevented from withdrawing as attorney of record in issued patents. This can lead the public into believing that a practitioner is responsible when they are not. Law firms routinely transfer files back and forth. Some practitioners do not feel it is necessary to file a new POA for issued patents because POA is technically "ineffective." Given ...more »

Used Stored Credit Card Information like a Deposit Account

Now that the new Financial Manager stores credit card information, why not allow pre-authorized payment of fees from a stored credit card in the same way you pre-authorize payment (underpayment, extension fees, etc.) from a deposit account? Essentially, what I am suggesting is have the stored credit card perform the equivalent function of the deposit account. Like the deposit account, this would be an opt-in request. ...more »

Charge Deposit Account based on Customer Number

Add to Financial Manager the ability to associate deposit accounts with customer numbers. Then allow practitioners associated with a specific customer number authorize the Office to charge the deposit account associated with the customer number. Practitioners sign correspondence being filed with the Office but may rarely effect the submission of, and payment for, such filings. As a result, practitioners making an authorization ...more »

Patent Holder Information

When accessing maintenance fee information, the Patent Holder Information is actually the information for the Fee Address. While I understand much of the public may not identify with "Fee Address," labeling this as the "Patent Holder" isn't appropriate either. I would like to suggest a revision to something similar to Fee Payer Information. This way if the information is for a law firm or annuity provider, it will ...more »

Enable change of entity status when paying maintenance fees

Maintenance fees are associated with the entity size at the time issue fee is paid. As patents are acquired and company sizes change, the entity size can change during the patent term.

Please let us select entity size change through the fee payment system, rather than requiring a separate communication.

Enable Authorization of Deposit Account even if No fees are due

When you pay fees, you can authorize withdrawal of other fees from your deposit account.

This option is not available when no fees are being paid.

Please add the option. While we can & have used the response text to authorize the use of the deposit account, the Patent Office is not always consistent about noticing such an authorization.

EFS Web: Easier Payment of Fees

The list of fees when you submit an action via EFS is random. Why is the IDS fee of $180 under "Miscellaneous fees" and the "Processing fee" of $140 is immediately visible? What code sections do those "Processing fees" apply to? How do you pay the fee for something that you can't find? Please add the ability to search fees, and the actual code sections to which each fee corresponds (e.g. the Processing Fee appears ...more »

Web ADS - date of signature

The web-based ADS does not fill in a date on the PDF version, it just leaves the field blank. It does not appear to go back and add the date once it's actually filed. This creates a poor file copy for our records. Would like the web-ADS complete with signing date to show up as a downloadable link at the confirm/submit stage, so I can get a file copy without having to go into Private PAIR as a second step.
