eCommerce Modernization Project

This eMod IdeaScale is designed to be a forum for public suggestions and discussions to drive the improvements to the electronic patent application process. The eCommerce Modernization (eMod) Project will modernize USPTO’s application filing and viewing systems to better fit your needs.

You can contribute by sharing ideas, discussing through the comments sections, or voting on ideas. We regularly check through the ideas and comments, share them with the team, and will even post a few ideas of our own! Although we will not respond to every idea, all ideas will be reviewed and considered. eMod IdeaScale FAQs

More information about the project can be found at http://www.uspto.gov/patent/emod. If you have any questions for the eMod Team, please contact us at emod@uspto.gov.

We look forward to hearing your feedback!

Allow Users to Opt-Out of Certain Automatic Notifications

An associate left our firm today so all the personnel he sponsored were removed. Each of these 80+ people received a confirmation of removal. I can appreciate the reason for sending the notification is to allow personnel working with each other to confirm erroneous removals, however, personnel in large firms such as ours expect there to be a reason for changes such as these and need not receive these types of emails. ...more »

Back-up Access for USPTO.gov Urgently Needed

The ability to log in to Private PAIR and EFS-Web using a PKI was unavailable on May 30 and 31. On May 31 the USPTO.gov login suddenly failed. Yes, filings can be made through other means such as the EFS-Web contingency system, fax (not applications), mail, and hand delivery (for those with direct PTO access). What cannot be done is any other function that the USPTO.gov account provides access to such as sponsorship ...more »

Certified Copy Center - Add Private PAIR Access Info

Discovered that requesting a certified copy through Private PAIR avoids the need for an entitlement document. Yay! It would be great to have that information included on the home page for the Certified Copy Center. For example, after explaining Proof of entitlement you could have two bullets. One for Private PAIR indicating that private access results in acceptance of entitlement; and two for all other requests where ...more »

Petition to Withdraw - Optional Correspondence Address Change

It would be nice to have the ePetition for Withdrawal as Attorney to mirror PTO/AIA/83 by only taking correspondence address information if it needs to be changed to the applicant/inventor. Form 83 doesn't require the practitioner to enter new correspondence information unless there needs to be a change to what is already present.

Eliminate Two-Step Authentication for MyUSPTO

Two-step authentication was not always required in the past for logging into MyUSPTO. With the issue of not being able to retrieve code emails today, it seems smart for the Office to eliminate any requirement for two-step authentication at the MyUSPTO login stage. Instead, require the two-step authentication when the user attempts to access a secure system for the first time. For example, the first time someone clicks ...more »

(Re-)Fix eFiling receipts

For a long time, EFS eFiling receipts left the "Deposit Account" and "Authorized User" fields blank, even when fees were paid by Deposit Account. This was fixed at some point in the last few years, but seems to have broken again. Please fix this.

Add Link to Certified Copy Center to MyUSPTO

Users of the new Certified Copy Center ("Center") must sign in at the Center's page rather than access through their MyUSPTO page. Although already signed in through MyUSPTO, users will need to sign in again when accessing the Center's page.

A link to the Center should be available under both the Patents and Trademarks drop-down menus.

Certified Copy Center - Entitlement Document?

Kudos for converting the system for ordering certified copies. There is a major flaw in the system when you require users to log in using their USPTO.gov account. The flaw is that the system requires one or more entitlement documents before a user can proceed. This is a flaw because practitioners associated with customer numbers have access to unpublished applications, and the staff the sponsor do as well. Why require ...more »

Fix WebADS date!

The WebADS form currently does NOT fill in the date field in the signature block, which is a huge problem: if an ADS is not properly signed, which signature includes the date, it is treated as a transmittal letter and not a proper ADS. Critically, this means that any priority claims are not (or may not be) considered. Applicants should NOT be penalized for using the PTO's own systems, especially when much of the appeal ...more »

Add Role Permissions to Sponsorship Tool

Removing sponsored staff when they leave a firm is an urgent task and cannot always wait for practitioners to have time to complete the process. Alleviate this burden by including in the Sponsorship Tool a feature to allow for assigning different levels of security like in Financial Manager. A practitioner would designate one or more sponsored staff as administrators to manage sponsorship changes from the staff's own ...more »

Export List of Sponsored Staff

Add a feature to the Sponsorship Tool to allow a user to export the list of staff that have been sponsored by the practitioner. When a large number of practitioners sponsor the same staff, having a list to confirm is greatly beneficial to ensuring that staff no longer associated with the practitioner no longer have access under that practitioner.
