Modernization of PAIR

Patent Portfolio by Applicant / Assignee

We would love to have the ability to search our entire patent portfolio to get a snapshot of ongoing matters. Of course, having criteria in place to filter (narrow or expand) search results would be useful. In addition, having the option to generate reports in different formats (xls, pdf, etc.) would be another useful option for applicants (large and small).

Let attorneys subscribe to a PAIR calendar

It would be helpful if PTO due dates for a customer number could be downloaded or subscribed to as a calendar. Due dates for missing parts, office actions, issue fees would automatically populate a calendar, and attorneys could use a calendar app like Outlook or iCal or gCal to keep track of their due dates.

Modernization of PAIR

Make PAIR and EFS more accessible (stop using frames)

Currently, everything in PAIR uses coding frames to serve data. This is why all of PAIR has a single URL, why opening a two PAIR windows or two EFS windows doesn't let you do two things in parallel, and why you can't refresh or navigate forward or backward without it going haywire. Instead of the current setup, switch to a page-based, rather than frame-based, architecture. This would have tremendous benefits. Pulling ...more »

Modernization of PAIR

Improved Docketing View

A screen in PAIR that tracks all applications by customer number in a docket list (as currently performed) but with status indicator, calendar/timeline, and provides the ability to sort applications by pending activity, priority or due date, and status.

Modernization of EFS-Web

Real-Time EFS-Web/PAIR Unavailability Screen

It would be nice if, when EFS and/or PAIR go down, the screen indicating the system is unavailable had real-time information such as the time it went down, the current time, and any updates regarding getting it back online (such as an ETA). I think it may be useful to know how long it has been down and the likelihood of when it may come back online in order to make a contingency plan (since the actual EFS web-contingency ...more »

Make All References Cited Available as an XML or CSV Document

Currently we can download the PDF documents for all references cited in a patent or patent application. Most documents appear multiple times. It would be incredibly useful to be able to download an XML or CSV document including citations for all references, including an indication that it has been considered. This would make verifying that everything has been correctly cited much easier. If you want to make it even ...more »

Match paragraph numbers in published appln to as-filed spec

It would be convenient for citation purposes if the paragraph numbers in the published application match those in the specification as-filed. My suggestion is that, so long as the numbering in the as-filed specification meets the USPTO publication guidelines, the original paragraph numbering should be retained in the published specification. The reason is that, while specification amendments are made to the as-filed ...more »

Modernization of PAIR

Include Description/Title in Listed References

Right now, all NPL (and foreign) references are tagged only with "foreign reference" or "non-patent reference." This can be a pain when you have 20 NPLs and you need to download the one new one the Examiner is relying on. Ideally I would love a description (e.g. the author's name for any NPL, and the patent number for any foreign reference.) But if we can't have that, I'd like the items cited (or even better relied ...more »

Modernization of PAIR

Customized PAIR splash page

Reactions to the recent updates to the PAIR front page have been extremely mixed, but one thing is abundantly clear: people want different things to be immediately available on the PAIR splash page. I know some people who never search by docket number, only by application number; personally, the only search options I usually care about are correspondence and docket number. So why not make the splash page customizable, ...more »

Modernization of PAIR

File wrapper synchronization using Box, Dropbox, or Google Drive

The USPTO should support file synchronization (e.g., Box, Dropbox, or Google Drive support). PDF documents in the image file wrapper should automatically synchronize to subscribed users' Box, Dropbox, or Google Drive folder. Authorized practitioners and applicants could subscribe to private folders, whereas published application documents could be made available in public folders. My experience is that applicants typically ...more »

Modernization of PAIR

PAIR XML tweaks

In PAIR, the ability to download XML data for a customer number is useful, but two suggestions: 1) Have an option to get data from all your customer numbers at once; and 2) include in the XML an indicator of current status. It already lets you filter on application status ('all', 'new', 'pending', 'issued', 'abandoned', 'other') - simply include this status tag in the download.
