Data Format Consistency

The format used for application numbers, dates and patent documents are inconsistent in PAIR, assignments, EFS, etc.. All areas of the office should utilize the same format for this data, or the software should be modernized to accept all of the common formats. e.g., 14/999,999 and 14999999 or

2015-01-23 and 1/23/2015 and 01/23/2015 etc.

Link to Apn in PC after submitting a filing / file history

It would be very helpful if once you are done submitting something in Patent Center that instead of going back to the Home screen and searching for the same case, you can click the application number (or whatever) and it will take you to that specific case in Patent Center. It is our procedures that once a filing is submitted we download an "as filed" version for our official internal file wrapper and make sure there... more »

eTerminal Disclaimer - list the patent disclaimed

I think when you get the automatic approval of an e-Terminal Disclaimer in EFS, that the approval receipt document should include the patent/application number(s) that were listed in the disclaimer. I think it would also be very helpful if the notice on the front of the patent indicating that the patent is subject to a disclaimer also listed the patents/application number(s) disclaimed.

PatentCenter should say "fewer", not "less", for inventor count

There's a bit of bad grammar in Patentcenter. If you are using Patentcenter to look at a patent application, the number of inventors might exceed four. In that case you might click "show all inventors" to see all of the inventors. Then you would see a Patentcenter screen listing all of the inventors, an example of which is attached.

You might then want to return to the normal screen that does not show all of the inventors.... more »

Bulk Look-up for Maintenance Fees

Practitioners are often tasked with reviewing maintenance fee history. The data returned by the Office when looking up multiple records (max of 10 currently) is a great resource since it can be exported to Excel.

Being able to upload data to make payments is helpful as well, however, it would be optimal to also be able to upload bulk data for the purpose of verifying past and future maintenance fee information. Helpful... more »

Eliminate CN Association Warning for Follow-On Submissions

Practitioners often file documents in existing matters when the client moves their work from one practitioner to another. Therefore, a new Power of Attorney is usually filed to associate the application record with a new customer number. It is understood that the practitioner is not associated with the customer number of the prior counsel. Please eliminate the warning for follow-on filings to reduce the number of clicks... more »

Web ADS, Inventor section: "Save as new inventor" button

In the Web ADS Inventors section for new submissions, there is an "Edit new inventor" dialog box that allows an existing inventor to be edited. I recommend adding a "Save as new inventor" button to this dialog box, which will facilitate entry of additional inventors who share some or all of the Name, Residence, and Mailing address info as an already entered inventor.

Patent Center conceals PTO employee title

One of our listserv members reports: the Examiner lookup for an application needs to stop concealing the parenthetical title of the Examiner, and needs to stop making it impossible to copy the telephone number and other information from the pop-up screen.

When the Office of Patent Application Processing (OPAP) decides to release a patent application to the Examining Corps, what does not happen next is the Examining Corps... more »

Fee payment page is confusing because split on multiple pages

One of our listserv members reports the fee payment process is split among multiple pages. It's unclear from the first page that you can make additional selections for fee payment on the following page. All available fee payment options should be presented on a single page.

Eliminate conflicting language in Notice to File Miss Parts

Although it is generally accepted that if you are filing a response to a Notice to File Missing Parts or Notice to File Corrected Application Papers via EFS that you do not need to submit a return copy, the Notice actually contains conflicting instructions (see attached screenshot). The standard language of the Notices should be updated to definitively state that if you are filing a response via EFS that no return copy... more »

Customer number is awkward for granting access rights

One of our listserv members writes: The granting of access rights by one registered practitioner to other registered practitioners is presently mediated using the awkward "customer number" system. The "customer number" system is being twisted too many ways to try to do too many things. It ought to be possible to grant access rights as in ePCT, with access granted to some other registered practitioner as to selected applications.... more »

"FILED BY" should be practitioner rather than sponsored person

On the Electronic Acknowledgement Receipt for filing any documents, Patent Center specifies in the FILED BY field the name of the person who uploaded the documents for filing.
