Fix IDS form to accept six and five-digit patents

For many years, the Information Disclosure form does not allow the addition of U.S. patent numbers less than 1,000,000.

Any attempt to add a number in the U.S. patent section with six digits or less brings up the following popup: "Invalid Patent Number format. Patent numbers can be up to 13 charates, with the first two being alpha numeric. EXAMPLE: 99,999,999; 9999999."

Trying to fool the form by adding a leading... more »

Financial Manager Notifications

Notifications relating to payment method status should only be sent to administrators. In large firms such as ours, we have many fee payers who need not be involved in managing payment methods. As such, any user who is not designated as an administrator should not receive administrative like communications.

Deposit account status is not distributed to all users, only administrators. The same standard should be used... more »

More on Data Consistency

Currently there are many variations in the placement of data (application no., file date, docket no., etc.) on a communication from the Patent Office. It would be helpful if all communications used exactly the same basic format for application data, etc. For example, the arrangement of data in a Notice of allowance is different from the arrangement of data on an Office Action. Decisions on petitions are somewhat free-form.... more »

MyUSPTO improvements: PAIR to patent docket; manage favorites

1) Most of the time I go directly to the files that I manage on Private Pair. It seems to me it would be faster if I could do that right from MyUSPTO. Perhaps one way to do so would be to have controls in Patent Docket for linking to associated files in PAIR, both at the individual level and in bulk.
2) It would be helpful to have controls to edit the Favorites list faster. As it stands, when you add a link, it goes to... more »

Pre-exam policies and procedures should be public

Most of the internal pre-examination procedures are opaque outside of the USPTO. It would be very help to have, in writing, on the USPTO website the exact internal procedures used to evaluate whether a Power of Attorney form, drawings, application data sheet, etc. are compliant. This would help reduce errors and ultimately reduce USPTO staff work load.

ADS Priority Claim

Under the Domestic Benefit/National Stage Information section, since the first radio button labeled "Remove" does not work, could it be changed to "Add" instead (that works), so that when a Continuation, Divisional, or Continuation-in-part application is filed we can simply use the ADS from the parent application and choose the "Add" button to add our priority application? This would be extremely helpful especially when... more »

Eliminate conflicting language in Notice to File Miss Parts

Although it is generally accepted that if you are filing a response to a Notice to File Missing Parts or Notice to File Corrected Application Papers via EFS that you do not need to submit a return copy, the Notice actually contains conflicting instructions (see attached screenshot). The standard language of the Notices should be updated to definitively state that if you are filing a response via EFS that no return copy... more »

Opt-Out for Original Patent Grant

Allow applicants to opt-out of receiving an original patent grant as many do not wish to store the original documents. Although they are nicely presented, entities with large portfolios find little value in the original ribbon document.

Allowing those who do not wish to receive an original is a cost and environment saver. Law firms won't be asked to store thousands of original patent grants, or need to mail these documents... more »

Data Format Consistency

The format used for application numbers, dates and patent documents are inconsistent in PAIR, assignments, EFS, etc.. All areas of the office should utilize the same format for this data, or the software should be modernized to accept all of the common formats. e.g., 14/999,999 and 14999999 or

2015-01-23 and 1/23/2015 and 01/23/2015 etc.

PTO Communications

I suggest modifying the first page of PTO communications to include the title of the invention. This can help attorneys and agents quickly and easily remember the nature of the invention in question, and also makes for easy reference in filling out PTO forms that include a space for the title. It also puts the title in front of the attorney so as to note any typos that need correction. It is practically free and may... more »
